Germany’s 2016–17 Year of Science was on the theme of seas and oceans. The nonprofit /e-politik.de/ commissioned us to produce an explainer video and an infographic on that theme. The project received funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The video was released in German, English, and French and was shortlisted for the 2017 KIT Science Film Award.

Strong Storytelling

Our objective was to intrigue viewers about the underwater world and show its fragility and need for protection. The video’s greatest strength is its compelling storytelling techniques. The gripping, remarkable narrative takes the viewer on an undersea journey all the way down to the ocean floor.

During the plunge, it presents a variety of habitats and sea creatures. After reaching the bottom, the video changes perspective as we rise back to the surface and explains problems such as undersea mining, microplastic, overfishing, etc.
The narrator’s words and voice are tightly interwoven with the sound design.

Handmade Illustrations

Visually, the film is composed of numerous hand-drawn analog illustrations of sea creatures. The film shows very effectively how an analog visual style can make for an exceptional and dynamic video.
